What IS This??? {Wordless Wednesday 6/8}

I was doing my morning check on the garden while drinking my first cup of coffee and this is what I came across:

He looks kind of like a dragonfly, but that big, old needle thing on his butt has me wondering...

Anyone know what it is???

It looks like an ichneumons wasp.

It almost looks prehistoric. I kind of think of a yellow jacket - dragon fly mix, but I've never seen anything with that long tail-like thing. I hope someone recognizes it, I'm really curious. Great find, and thank you for sharing it.

That is definitely one weird bug. It is probably endangered. Only saying this because the ugly bug we wanted to enter into the the ugly bug contest was on the endangered species list. So we let it go free.

@LeAnn
Wow! I'm coming to you the next time I come across a weird insect! I went here (http://www.cirrusimage.com/hymenoptera_ichneumon_megarhyssa_fem.htm) and that is exactly what this was!

Thank you!

That stinger is crazy long! Great to get an ID on it, too!

If I found that in my garden, I don't know if I'd be sticking around long enough to find out what it was, much less get a pic of it! Good for you for being brave! :)

Oh that is a creepy looking bug! And the photos from the link of the egg laying process are even creepier! Yikes!

I love the color — though is it really so green as it seems in these photos, or is it picking up the color from the background?

I must admit, I was on the dragon fly train too. I never would have noticed the stinger had you not said anything. Cool.
