Here's to New Traditions! {Wordless Wednesday}

From my Facebook Page:
Monroe County Courthouse

Went to tell hubby we were leaving and snapped this. I had the camera on the wrong setting and this is what happened - kinda cool!

Me: "Get back here! It's dark and I can't see you!" I snapped the pic just so I could use the flash to locate him.

Our town's Christmas tree. :/ They lopped the top off a couple of years ago... I don't know why.

"Stick 'em up!"

Kids playing in the stage at Loranger Square. I love the metalwork of the lotus leaves & flower on this!
I stopped taking pictures after this. When we left on our little expedition, I had visions of photos with: faces in awe of the decorated homes, my guys all holding hands and enjoying the walk, the kids screwing around with each other. Nope.

The cookies and hot cocoa afterward were a hit, so at least we had that as a happy note to end on!
I'm really hoping that we'll have more fun next year...

The We Do Listen Foundation {#Giveaway (12/5) US & Can}

I've wanted to write up this post for over a week, but just couldn't find the time. Yeah, I could have done a quickie post... But I think The We Do Listen Foundation deserves more than that. This non-profit's mission is to help children learn to communicate their emotions effectively and find their own inner peace (how cool is that?!)

So, how do they do this? Check out the We Do Listen Foundation Web site. There, you will find FREE animated books, songs, posters and non-violent games. Additionally, the foundation sells nine Howard B. Wigglebottom books. The books are pretty darn great! Each one is focused on a subject that is important to children's personal growth, self-love, and general emotional well-being. Some of the topics covered in the books include: listening to what others have to say, bullying, anger management, divorce, peer pressure, and the need to belong. I received a book on the last subject for this review, and I love it!

My oldest was always pretty happy with himself. That is, until he decided to go to "real" school. The first month was pretty hard for him. His dad had cancer and was pretty sick at the time, so I attributed his quiet, withdrawn behavior to that. Then, I received a call from his teacher. It seems that he had started to make up unbelievable stories about himself - things he had done, toys he owned, people he knew, etc. - and the other kids knew that he was lying, the stories were just too amazing to be true. He wanted them to like him and thought this was the way to do it. After a long talk about listening to his own heart and being himself, then reassuring him that he would find friends who liked him just for who he really was, he managed to get past this huge speed bump. Within another month, he was one of the most popular kids in the class due to his empathetic nature (oh, and he was "totally cool" because he could draw neat pictures, too! LOL)

I really believe that the Howard B. Wigglebottom books, games, songs, and lesson plans would have prepared my oldest for his first taste of "I'm better than you because I _(fill in the blank)_" that seems to run rampant in classrooms.  In the book Howard B. Wigglebottom Listens to His Heart, written by Howard Binkow and illustrated by Susan F, Cornelison, Howard (a cute bunny who has the same feelings and makes the same mistakes that most children do) wants desperately to fit in. When his classmates laugh at him when they see him doing his very favorite thing, he vows to never do it again. Instead, he tries doing all sorts of other things that he thinks will make the other kids view him as being "cool".He screws them all up... miserably. He has a talk with his grandfather about the troubles he's having and, without telling him what to do, Grandpa steers Howard in the right direction. In the end, Howard is once again caught doing his favorite thing but, this time, he is cheered for it!

I am so glad to have this book for Little Guy. He's pretty self-confident right now, but you just never know when that confidence will crumble. It happened to my oldest! I've also been taking Little Guy to the Foundation's Web site to watch the animated versions of all of the Howard B. Wigglebottom books, play games, and learn new (catchy) songs. I've also taken some time to read over the lesson plans. There are some really great ideas in them! I think that, at three years old, it's the perfect time to introduce him to these concepts. Although I don't intend for Little Guy to go to school (he's 100% the unschooling type!), he'll still be around other children and need to be prepared for the inevitable.

I strongly urge you to go check out The We Do Listen Foundation's Web site and then head over to their online store. Right now, for U.S. buyers, all hardcover books are on sale for only $6 each (regularly $15)! And you can buy all 10 books for just $50. In addition to the Foundation's online store, you can find Howard B. Wigglebottom books nearly anywhere books are sold throughout the U.S. and Canada.

So, would you like to WIN your choice of a Howard B. Wigglebottom hardcover book for a special child in your life? Just enter in the Rafflecopter form below!

The Star Box - Review and Extra (Easy) Enrty {#MadeInMichigan}

This is a review for one of my sponsors of the Made in Michigan Blog Giveaway Hop, which will take place from October 28 – November 2. I will be offering my readers the chance to win a (Hand)Made in Michigan prize package worth nearly $200! Please take a moment to read about this wonderful Etsy shop and then fill out the Rafflecopter form below for a very easy extra entry into the giveaway.

I've been waiting for the item that The Star Box sent me to review, but it is in the hands of the USPS and I'm just not sure when it will arrive, so I'm going to tell you about this really cool Etsy shop right now and, hopefully, I'll be able to add my own review later!

If you are crafty in the least (or know someone who is), The Star Box is a shop to check out. Debra, the shop's owner, creates these stamps by hand, carving the rubber for each and hand sanding the wooden blocks they are mounted to. Now, I don't know how many of you have ever attempted making your own stamps, but I can tell you it isn't easy! I always skip over those neat and creative kids' crafts that I come across that include the word "stamp" in them - whether you make them from potatoes or Styrofoam, I cannot got them right. In high school, I had the opportunity to try to create stamps from rubber. Yeah. That didn't go well, either. One wrong move and the entire thing is ruined! And the time I put into very slowly and carefully carving them was too much for me to want to pursue the art any longer.
Look at how intricate the carving is for these Dragonfly Wings!

So, I have the utmost respect for anyone who has the skill and patience for making stamps. You really have to love your work when you do this! While I may not care for the actual making of stamps, I do love using them! Stamps aren't just for adding a little embellishment to a handmade card or scrapbook. I've seen tutorials that use rubber stamps to decorate clothing, for handmade wrapping paper, and to include as images in art. Check out the use of this Fancy Bird Cage Stamp, for instance:

In addition to single stamps, The Star Box offers stamp sets. These can be used in any number of ways. For this review, I'm waiting on a set of Art Doll Paper Doll Stamps. The set includes the five stamps pictured below, along with an entire kit to make a ton of little paper dolls for playing with or using for crafting:
  • (4) 4"x4" squares of light weight, up-cycled cardboard for the doll body parts

  • (10) 4"x4" sheets of assorted decorative papers

  • (4) metal bottle caps ( these are real used, clean bottle caps, not the shiny new ready made caps for crafting)

  • Assorted Paper Ephemera - this can include book pages, vintage images, tags, paper stubs, tickets, etc.

  • Assorted Embellishments - this can include tinsel pipe cleaners, metal letters, assorted beads, assorted buttons, fabric pom pom ribbon, small amounts of jewelry wire in various colors, sticky back label strips in various colors with words punched on them, etc.

  • (12)- mini brads for moveable arms and legs
I cannot wait to get my hands on this kit! I'd love to make my niece a set of paper dolls with family members' faces on them. I'm thinking of even creating a diorama of a dollhouse from a big box so she can play with them like that. The Star Box has this really cool set of Retro Kitchen Appliance Stamps that I think would be really neat to use in the background of the kitchen section of the house. Think of it: a pretty much flat dollhouse in which she can store all of her dolls and slide it under the bed when she's through! Not only would it be a gift, but a much-needed creative venture for me, too. Check out what Debra has done with this kit:
Today only (ends 10/30 at midnight EST), if you're a Twitter follower of The Star Box, you can get in on the Buy 1, Get 1 Sale! Buy one stamp or set, get one of equal or lesser value ABSOLUTELY FREE! So, head over and follow and get your order in ASAP. Oh, and if you follow, make sure to claim your entry in the Made in Michigan Blog Hop. You can win one of the above Art Doll Paper Doll Kits (including all of the extras!) or a $35 gift certificate to The Star Box as part of the HUGE prize package!

In addition to The Star Box's Etsy shop and Twitter account, you can find the business on Facebook. Also, if you didn't make the connection, Debra is the owner of Michigan Spinning Company! You can find out more about that on my review post HERE (it was my favorite review so far!)

Disclosure: I will receive an Art Doll Paper Doll Stamp Set and Kit, as described above, for the purpose of review. No other compensation will be received. All opinions are 100% my own.

World #Peace Before 2021 {Gotta read this!}

Have you heard of Axil Kollist? If not, you should know about this amazing kid. At the age of six, Axil learned about the horrors of war and the effects that war has on civilians around the world. He wanted to do something, anything, to get the message out that world peace really is attainable. He chose 2021 as his goal for world peace because that is the year that he will turn 21 years old. Think his ideas are too grand to be realized? Consider what he wrote on his Web site, World Peace Before 2021:
"My Mom told me that President John Kennedy set a goal that the USA land a Man on the Moon before 1970. People didn’t think it could be done. But with a lot of hard work, that ‘impossible’ goal was reached. And just in time.. In July of 1969. My goal for World Peace Before 2021 may seem impossible.. But really it isn’t!"

So, how is a kid activist going about spreading his message? The simplest ways imaginable, that's how. On the Web site, you can request a free Bumper Sticker to put on your car (well, ours is on the tote bag I carry around with Little Guy's extra change of clothes, snacks,  and just-in-case bandages!) I've been asked about that sticker more times than I can recall, so merely displaying it somewhere really does help spread the word! He's now 11 years old and has already sent out tens of thousands of these bumper stickers all over the world and currently has them in English, French, and Spanish (you can help him out by going here and translating his message into another language for him!) He's also distributing Buttons to anyone, worldwide, who emails him to request one. You can read about how Axil got started with his distribution in this article about his winning the Little Humanitarian Award in 2007.

And, yet another way that Axil is sharing his message is through song! You can listen to it at the bottom of this post (I can't get the video to move! LOL). It is also embedded on the World Peace before 2021 Web site.

Now, why am I writing about this? Because Axil's mom recently wrote a submission to the Reader's Digest Your Life contest. The winner will receive $25,000, and I can only imagine what he'd be able to do with that money! He needs your votes to win this thing, so please consider heading over and voting for PEACE! HERE is the direct link to the entry.  You will have to have to like Reader's Digest on Facebook to vote (sorry). I already like them, so I didn't have to find out. You can vote once every 24 hours - Voting ends 11/15/2011.

Fire Prevention Week {Word-FULL #WordlessWednesday}

This is Fire Prevention Week and/or Month (depending on who you ask.) We visited our fire station for open house this past Saturday to learn about fire safety and, of course, check out the cool fire trucks! Oh, and check out the last couple of "artsy" pics at the bottom (no, no naked people!) I happened to capture two scenes that turned out amazing! (Sorry it's so long!)

 Little Guy was lucky enough to find his own, personal tour guide!

He got to try out the seat belts, which also have breathing apparatuses ready to strap on in a hurry. He was also able to try out the "hose gun". When I visited the fire station as a kid, they were still using the old (and heavy!) brass nozzles!

Have to try out driving the truck. He kept trying to push buttons whenever I put the camera up to take a picture. He was looking for the lights and siren. I'm glad he didn't find them -  can you imagine?! I finally talked him into just making the sounds like he does at home.

I love that they have this mannequin fully decked out in fire fighter gear. I was able to tell Little Guy that if someone shows up at our house dressed like this, he shouldn't be afraid. Can you imagine how shocking it would be for a little kid to wake up in the middle of the night to this and NOT know it was just a fire fighter?

And, while we were there, they received a call. Little Guy and I went outside to get out of their way as they prepared to leave, which took all of thirty seconds!

 Oh, and there was A LOT of touching! He knows that he is never supposed to touch vehicles of any kind while we're out and about (it keeps him from setting off alarms and from being behind a vehicle and out of sight of mirrors if someone is backing up.) Well, he had his fill of touching at the fire station! When we got home, I noticed his hands were BLACK.

Did I mention that they had refreshments, too? Donuts, cookies, and fresh apple cider! We were also given a brand new smoke detector, lots of informative coloring books, the hat & balloon, and even some crayons! Oh, and one more thing before my "cool" pictures - I made that shirt for him. The fire truck on the chest and badge on his sleeve came from some PJ's that he outgrew. I just sewed them over the printed junk on the shirt that I picked up at a garage sale for a dime.

Check out the rainbow effect on the web! This photo isn't touched up, except to sharpen and crop. I watched this quarter-sized spider (I wish it's colors had come out - red legs, black/brown body) make the web, then took the photo as soon as she (I'm assuming) settled into the center.
