Don't Miss the Moon on the Eve of the Vernal Equinox!

Have you heard about the "Supermoon" yet? If not, here's the scoop. Tonight, the full moon will be the closest to Earth it has been since December 12, 2008 - and it won't be this close again until November 14, 2016. According to NASA, the moon will be 14% larger and 30% brighter than "regular" full moons.

The best time to see the moon at its largest will be on the horizon, when it rises. You can find out when the moon will rise in your area by going to 40-Below.com and, if you're in the US, just click on where you live on the map. If you're not in the US, you can still find out, but you'll have to find out your latitude and longitude first by going HERE. Just click on your country, put the name of your city/town, then choose from the list.

Saturn will also be highly visible, too. And, if you've got a small telescope, you'll be able to see the rings, too!!! Just make sure you wait until mid-evening before trying because Saturn will have moved far enough away from the moon so as not to out-shine those rings.

And, finally, don''t go freaking out if you hear that the moon's being so close is going to mess with the tides so much that there will be all kids of weird natural disasters occurring!Yes, the Spring Tides along the ocean shores will be higher than they are normally, they're not going to go nuts.

And don't forget to take pictures! If you do and you post them on your site, please leave a link in a comment. I love moon pictures and I'll try to write up a post with everyone's links in it!

How Do You Get Your Family to Eat Healthier? {MyBlogSpark.com}

It's a question I keep seeing over and over on blog posts, Facebook statuses, and Tweets. People just don't quite know how to encourage their spouses and children to choose healthy snacks. I really don't have this problem. Maybe I'm lucky, but I think it has a little more to do with how I shop.

Two years ago, we were just like the average American household. We had a few bags of chips on the shelf, ice cream in the freezer, cans of pop and pudding cups in the refrigerator, and cookies in the cupboard. My oldest was lethargic all of the time, my husband was having problems with nausea and heartburn, and I was tired all of the time.

The change came when little guy started eating solid foods. Now, I am one of those people who researches stuff - relentlessly. I don't just look for one or two opinions on message boards. I go for the real stuff - peer-reviewed research. And I look for all kinds of research articles - both the pros and cons of everything. So, when I did my research, I really did it!

I found that there were easy ways to incorporate treats in our diets, yet stay healthy doing it. I replaced the potato chips with baked tortilla chips and shredded cheese. The we now have granola bars instead of cookies. The pop has been struck off of my shopping list and I now buy green tea and 100% fruit juices. And my best stand-in has been yogurt. Instead if ice cream, we now have tubes of Go-Gurt in our freezer. Everyone prefers it over ice cream, even! And that pudding is gone and we have Yoplait Delights, Whips!, and Original in our fridge.

And now there's Yoplait Kids! It is low in added sugar and is a great source of vitamin D, calcium, & protein. Both of my guys love the Strawberry. It's gone as soon as I buy it! I want to complain, but how can I have a problem with them actually opting for the good-for-you snack??? It's just too easy to grab a container of yogurt and a spoon and satisfy that sweet tooth.

Right now,
you can score a great coupon!

According to the fine print, I can't tell you what the deal is, but it's worth it to head HERE, "like" them and fill out the registration form. Then, keep an eye on your mailbox!

****By posting this information, I have the chance to win a prize provided by Yoplait through MyBlogSpark.

SPRING! (At least for a minute)

Guess what I did yesterday! OK, I'm just going to tell you, I'm too excited to wait until you figure it out - I played in the dirt!!!!

Yep, Little Guy and I went out and worked in our garden. This year, it's not "my" garden, but "our" garden. I finally have someone in this family who is as tuned into nature and I am and I am going to enjoy every moment. My little guy is just like me - he notices the little things like the shapes of leaves, the different hues of green in a patch of grass, the sounds of far-away birds, and the shapes of clouds. We're going to have a great time in our garden this year!

(Now, I know it doesn't look like much, but we live in an apartment. Our landlord was kind enough to let us till up the yard as long as we promised not to make it a huge chunk of yard. So, I planned the garden to be in an "L" shape = 60 feet long by 3 feet wide on one part, and 15 feet by 3 feet at the other. It's not huge, but it's enough to have fun in, right?)

So, we got out the little shovels and dug in the dirt. We cleared all of the leftover debris from winter, like sticks fallen from the trees and built-up piles of leaves. We cleared out the dead marigolds and morning glories that I left all winter (hey - it cold cold out fast and I got lazy!) Then, we got down on our hands and knees and collected every fallen seed from the two species so we could make seed bombs for his grandmas. There were thousands of seeds and Little Guy worked like a trooper.

... and dump it out!

Fill it up...

We were out there for three hours and he never once got bored! Now, he's only 28 months old and he usually can't stand doing the same thing for more than 15-20 minutes. But yeaterday, he didn't stop when a train went by, or even when a firetruck followed by an ambulance flew past with sirens & lights blaring! Nope, he had a job to do and he was going to do it!

We found grubs, clovers, cool-looking rocks, and even a few lethargic worms. We discovered that the ground is still frozen in the shady part of the yard. We talked about what we plan on growing in our garden. So far, he's decided we will have peas, green beans, carrots, tomatoes, and lots of strawberries. Sounds good to me!

Now, all I need to do is plan out where we will plant everything and find some good organic seeds and plants! I think I may try out a few of the ideas listed on Code Name: Mama's 10 Unique Gardening Activities for Kids, too. I really like the idea of planting things that are fun to touch and hear. Little Guy is always wanting to touch everything and having plants just for him to do that to will protect the ones he might damage.

OH! I can't wait until it's really spring and we can get out there everyday!!!

Gotta love the little spot of dirt on his nose!

Where Are My Random Acts of Kindness Posts??? {March of Kindness 3/5 - 3/17}

March of Kindness

"So, what happened to your March of Kindness project?"

Well, it's like this. After my last posing for this meme about being kind to myself, everything fell apart. My computer crashed (again), my little guy had a round of the Terrible Twos that was deafening, dinner was burnt, my oldest came home with a note from his teachers sayiong that he hadn't turned in one bit of homework for a minth, and my husband decided he needed to take a nap in the midst of it all! I went to bed that night wishing I had skipped my little bit of luxury - it wasn't worth what came after! Guess karma had it out for me that day.

Things slowly got worse for a few days, then got better. I wanted to jump back into the March of Kindness, but I feel like a hypocrite. I look at the great list of ideas posted on Code Name: Mama's site and feel as if these are things I should strive to do everyday, anyway. A few years ago, I had a complete change occurr within myself. I no longer looked out fo me and only me. I regained the empathy and compassion I had back when I was a child. It was around that time that I decided to try to be "good" to others at all times. I began trying to look for little ways to make others' lives easier, whether it was helping someone carry heavy bags of groceries to their car or finding that lost dog's home.

I feel weird posting about these little things that I do every day. It's like tooting my own horn and that's not me at all. I get embarrassed about it. I don't want to feel proud when I do these things, I just want them to be a part of who I am. So, if I don't post every day about these thing, now you know why. When I do post, it will be to share an experience that, perhaps, one of my readers may be inspired to try out, too.

With that said, here is one thing I did last week that helped me, my family, some homeless in my area, the local library, and some pregnant teens and their little ones.

I have a huge collection of books. I love browsing our local used bookstore's shelves for interesting titles and very old first editions. When these books are only a dime a dozen - literally! - I end up coming home with stacks each time I visit the store. Most of these books are the kind that I intend to read but just don't have the time. The rest are books that I think I may need someday. They line all of my walls. They collect big, thick layers of dust. About 90% of them have never been opened by me or anyone else in my family. So, I decided to swallow big and get rid of all but the essentials. It was a huge job. Since there was so much dust, and I'm highly allergic, I had to carefully remove each book from its place, vacuum it off, then wipe it with a wet rag. I made four piles: Keepers, Donate to Salvation Army's Homeless Shelter, Donate to Teen Pregnancy Charity, Donate to Library.

We live a block away from a Salvation Army homeless shelter. This is a refuge for families who have been evicted. The shelter offers private rooms for each family, meals, and help finding jobs. I put all of my "how to save money" and "how to fix your home" books into that pile along with all of my novels and the children's books my kids don't read anymore. Those kids have lost everything. And, when you're being evicted and have no place to keep your stuff, the last thing most people are going to pack up and take along are their book - they're heavy and take up a lot of space!

I have a ton of natural childbirth, breastfeeding, and attachment parenting books. I don't need them anymore. I'm not having anymore children, I'm a pro at breastfeeding and little guy is close to self-weaning, and I really don't need to study attachment parenting - I'm living it! I don't think that teen mothers are prepared for any of these things. They are told how to eat right. They might be taught how to make formula and change a diaper. That's it. What they learn is about from friend is how to ask for epidurals to make the "excruciating" pain of labor disappear, and that breastfeeding is "gross", and they're often on their own when it comes to caring for their little ones. So, hopefully I will be able to help educate some new moms and make their lives a little easier.

Finally, all of the random books I had that didn't fit the other two categories went to our public library. They have a book shelf in their foyer that hold donated books. You can buy anything you want for whatever you think it's worth. The money goes to fund after school programs in that particular library. We live in a poor area of town and our library always gets the short end of the stick when they're handing out the funds each year. It's nice to know that my books will be used to help the librarians buy craft supplies, etc. to use for their after school programs!

The few books that I kept are either used often or special to me. I managed to give away a whopping 300 books and kept about 75! My house is dust-free (for now) and I have all of this extra shelf space. So, if oyu're looking to get rid of a few books, keep local charities in mind - they don't often get book donations because it's not something we think of giving.

Need to Show Off!

I just wanted to show off my cake decorating skills. For years, I've been decorating cakes with just one piping tip and one star tip. My mom gave me a Wilton Professional Decorating Set for Christmas and this was the first time I've been able to use it.

I really wanted to do a Yellow Submarine-themed cake. But, since it was my son's birthday, he got to choose. I know it looks pirate-y, but that wasn't the plan. I was supposed to leave off the crossbones and add "Lucky" above the skull. He also wanted fire. I ran out of time, so this is what we ended up with. Still pretty cool, right?

I've got to learn how to take pictures indoors with that camera!
After my son added his bit of creativity.
What do you think? Do you like to decorate cakes, cookies, or cupcakes? Do you have a favorite decorating glory that you'll always remember?
